The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH, http://www.forth.gr), established in 1983, is one of the largest research centres in Greece. The research and technological directions of the Foundation cover major areas of scientific, social, and economic interest, such as computer science, telecommunications, applied and computational mathematics, molecular biology and biotechnology, bioinformatics, lasers, materials science, chemical engineering as well as historical and cultural studies.

The Institute of Computer Science (ICS-FORTH, http://www.ics.forth.gr), one of the seven institutes of FORTH, has a long history and recognised tradition, since its establishment in 1983, in conducting basic and applied research, developing applications and products, providing services, and playing a leading role in Greece and internationally, in the fields of Information and Communication Technologies.

FORTH-ICS is participating in CONNEXIONs with its Computational Vision and Robotics Laboratory (CVRL). Established in 1985, the groups’ activities emphasise research and development in the areas of computer vision and autonomous mobile robots with “intelligent” behaviour. More specifically, the research efforts are directed towards visual perception of static and dynamic characteristics of the 3D world (depth, shape, colour, motion), object tracking, robot navigation, behaviour modelling, and 3D reconstructions. In addition to the research work outlined above, CVRL also aims at applying the methods, technologies, and tools it develops in domains such as security, space monitoring, industrial automation, the support of people with special needs, home automation, etc.
